Software
SuperX
SuperX is a web-based information system with a graphical user interface and integrates several data sources in
educational institutions into a data warehouse. Users can adapt statistics to their specific needs.
SuperX was developed at Karlsruhe University, Germany, and has been developed to be a web-based Application by the
SuperX-Team in Duisburg, Germany. The system makes use of a database server (Informix or PostgreSQL), a servlet
container (Tomcat) and a java-based frontend. Data extraction and transformation scripts regularly (e.g. over night)
import data from different data sources, for example student statistics. Thus, data from univerity administrations can
be presented in an integrated way. SuperX consists of modules and can be fed from any data source. The prepared modules
are (partly under construction):
- Student statistics: the SOS-Module
Scripts specially designed for the Student Operation System by the HIS GmbH (HISSOS) extract relevant data from
the operative system and transfer them into the SuperX data warehouse. As a result, queries render statistics
about students and exams.
- Controlling: The COB-Module
In the COB-Module controlling data and queries are presented via SuperX.
- Staff / Personnel
Staff and personnel data from the Database by the HIS GmbH (HISSVA) are extracted and presented via SuperX.
- Finance: The FIN-Module
Financial data from the MBS/FSV-System by the HIS GmbH are transferred to SuperX and statistics about expenditure
etc are delivered.
- Buildings: The BAU-Module
Data about a University's buildings and facilities are loaded from HISBAU or BUISY and are presented via SuperX.
- Combined values: The integrated Module
One major advantage of SuperX is the possibility to combine statistics from different data sources, e.g. resources
and capacity statistics.
- Degree Programmes: The GANG-Module
One of a Higher Education Institution's "products" are the degree programmes. These can be documented and
administrated with the GANG-Module. Using a comfortable web-based interface, you can manage your degree programmes
and related information, such as start and end, external catalogues, accrediation data, evaluation.
- Inventory: The IVS-Module
Load inventory data from the resource management system and deliver a report displaying relevant inventory data
- campus-wide.
- Applications: The ZUL-Module
How many applications does which degree programme have, and how many admissions? And even more: how many applicants
accept the offer and enroll? These questions can be answered with the ZUL-Module.
- Success or not: The ERFOLG-Module
What happends to students after enrollment? How many students are still enrolled at which point of time, and how
many students have left university? How many reached a degree? These important statistics can easily be generated
with the ERFOLG-Module.
All the queries and tables of the modules can be adapted to the users' needs, and new modules can be implemented.
SuperX contains a user administration which makes it possible to give university employees or associates specific rights
for specific queries and institutions. It can be used for planning and controlling and also as a general reporting tool
on the campus.
SuperX runs on UNIX and LINUX platforms and uses free software (e.g. Postgresql, Java, Apache, Tomcat) except for the
optional Informix Dynamic Server. SuperX itself is an open source project.
